Course Overview
This 39th annual Maine Chapter ACEP winter symposium will present a broad spectrum of emergency medicine related topics. Designed to assist the active emergency care provider in both topical and classical areas of emergency medicine. This course will be useful for health practitioners who may encounter or have an interest in urgent and emergency situations. Practical and focused, each topic will be presented in an evidenced based manner with practical recommendations the learner can take to their next shift.

Objectives:


Keynote Speaker
Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will understand the importance of integrating gratitude into the daily practice of emergency medicine.

Airway Track
Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will name key steps in the preparation for pediatric and surgical emergency airways. 

Cardiac Track
Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will describe the benefits of transesophageal echocardiogram in the management of patients with cardiac arrest and will discuss key elements in the care of these patients after the return of spontaneous circulation.

Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will be able to apply knowledge of STEMI mimics and the use of Lewis leads to their next shift in the emergency department. 

COVID Track
Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will discuss the latest evidence in the management of patients with COVID-19, including pediatric patients and those patients that are critically ill. 

Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will be able to apply bedside ultrasound to their care of patients with COVID-19.  

Critical Care Track
Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will identify steps in the management of critically ill patients in the emergency department, including those with massive and submassive pulmonary embolism, refractory hypoxia, thyroid storm and myxedema coma.

Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will list the five most important aspects of stabilizing and packaging a patient for helicopter transfer. 

Neurology Track
Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will be able justify the importance of CTA in the work-up of acute strokes and appraise the use of TNK for the treatment of acute strokes.

Pediatrics Track
Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will list key management steps in the resuscitation of critically ill infants and children.

Pot Pourri
Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will discuss a variety of topics in emergency medicine including the assessment of finger injuries, the assessment of eye complaints, the use of open notes in the emergency department.  

Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will recall several of the most recent society guidelines in emergency medicine and will identify common medication errors.

Orthopedics/Procedural Track
Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will be able to apply new skills in shoulder reduction, jaw reduction and IV access.  

Ultrasound
Objective: At the end of this didactic session the learner will be able to use bedside ultrasound to supplement the assessment of lungs and to assist in the placement of peripheral IVs.
