Course Overview
The goal of this conference is to provide a forum for all interested providers to come together to hear the trends in sleep medicine with a focus on integration of innovative therapies. This conference is designed to meet a critical need expressed by many physicians, psychologists, nurses social workers and other specialty groups to address and manage the growing number of patients with complaints of poor sleep. This is an opportunity to hear from the experts in sleep medicine, who are contributing standards for practice at this conference.

Objectives
  1. Explain the historical context of sleep disorders, the common sleep disorder and the treatments for then and now
  2. Create a biopsychosocial treatment plan for insomnia for an older adult
  3. Identify the reasons sleep changes with age
  4. Describe the prevalence and consequences of OSA in older olders
  5. Explore the relationship between OSA and dementia
  6. Describe how psychotropic medications can influence sleep duration and quality
  7. List and distinguish the three primary components of Cognitive Behavioral therapy
  8. Demonstrate behavioral goal setting for better sleep hygiene and stimulus control
  9. Summarize the strategy of sleep restriction
  10. Define "memory evolution" and describe how it differs from memory consolidation
  11. List three examples of sleep-dependent memory evolution
  12. Explain the NEXTUP model of dream function and construction
  13. List the recommended amounts of sleep for children across the age spectrum
  14. Describe the key clinical features of pediatric narcolepsy
  15. Describe the common clinical features of partial arousal parasomnias
  16. Identify the spectrum of sleep disturbances reported in unipolar major depression and in bipolar disorder
  17. Explain the risks posted by sleep changes for incident and recurrent episodes of mood disorders, as well as risk for suicidal ideation and suicidal behavior
  18. Describe the utility of measuring sleep changes in the clinical care of patients at risk for, or already living with, unipolar depression and bipolar disorder
  19. Discuss the major influences of sleep on the physical and mental health in older adults
  20. Create a brief differential for the common sleep complaints of older adults
