Course Overview
Tobacco use in populations with behavioral health conditions is a critical health disparity. Individuals living with behavioral health conditions are dying 25 years earlier than the general population; most often from tobacco related cancer, heart disease, and lung disease. Join other behavioral health professionals and MaineHealth Center for Tobacco Independence Training and Education team for a half-day training to learn more about the health burden of tobacco and nicotine on individuals with behavioral health conditions, real and perceived barriers to providing treatment in mental health and substance use settings, and opportunities for treatment. Moreover, learn how to enhance your existing skills to utilize low barrier strategies that can significantly support patients in reducing their use or quitting use of various type of products.

Objectives
  1. • Understand that tobacco use disorder is a chronic addictive disease of the brain
  2. • Understand the bio-psycho-social nature of tobacco use disorder
  3. • Understand that recovery from tobacco use disorder is a process, not an event
  4. • Understand that treatment for tobacco use disorder is process driven, not outcome driven
  5. • Understand that providers can be effective in increasing a client’s motivation to quit using tobacco
  6. • Understand the cumulative nature of tobacco treatment interventions
  7. • Identify an approach to assessing tobacco use with their clients which fits their treatment setting
  8. • State at least three assessment questions which can be integrated into their standard client assessment.
  9. • Describe Maine Tobacco HelpLine (MTHL) services to their clients
  10. • Identify at least 3 ways to access MTHL services for their clients.
  11. • Identify and access opportunities for additional tobacco treatment training.
  12. • Describe the 7 FDA approved medications for tobacco treatment
  13. • Explain the safety considerations and protocols for utilizing tobacco treatment medications with the behavioral health population
  14. • Share information about the benefits of pre-quit NRT
  15. • Describe tobacco use prevalence and its burden among persons with mental illness
