Course Overview

Annual interdisciplinary educational activity with a pediatric focus. This years theme is around pediatric behavioral health topics.

Topics include:

  • Autism spectrum disorder
  • Supporting children with behavioral health needs
  • Pediatric Care Coordination across the state of Maine
  • Behavioral Health Screening tool
  • Child sex exploitation in the U.S. and challenges for healthcare providers
  • Complex care in pediatrics

Objectives

The theme for this year's Clinical Updates in Pediatric Practice is behavioral health, including contemporary topics that impact pediatric behavioral health. We will explore strategies to employ in managing care of children with behavioral health diagnoses and identify community and state resources to support this population. The final case study will review a medically complex patient's care across the spectrum of health care settings, including managing behaviors attributed to dealing with a chronic illness.

Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:


  1. Describe diagnostic features of autism spectrum disorder
  2. Identify strategies to improve hospital stays for youth with autism spectrum
  3. Review the Child Life Assessment Process when supporting patients and families in a medical environment
  4. Explore unique and individualized accommodations or approaches to providing pediatric are in the medical setting
  5. Consider current Child Life practices for supporting patients with autism and/or behavioral health needs
  6. Discuss challenges of care planning in the absence of local resources
  7. Identify professional support opportunties for care management via technology
  8. Describe the benefits and impact of behavioral health screening on inpatient pediatric units
  9. Utilize the electronic medical record for enhanced behavioral health screening in the pediatric population
  10. Identify factors that increase risk for Child Sex Exploitation (CSE)
  11. Recognize long term effects of adverse childhood experiences
  12. Utilize techniques for broaching the subject of CSE with patients
  13. List four resources to supplement clinical care for victims of CSE
  14. Define medical complexity for pediatric patients.
  15. Apply critical thinking within a case study to problem solve common issues that arise during inpatient stays for medically complex patients
